Program gives veterans 1 stop to get help

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Minnesota has launched a new case management program to give war veterans one place to go for help - for everything from family counseling, debt management, disability services and other support.

The program is being run by Lutheran Social Services, which received a $500,000 contract to provide the service. It started in November.

Officials realized there was a need for case management help like this after the LinkVet hot line started ringing in 2007 when vets returned from Iraq and Afghanistan. Those vets were reporting everything from drug abuse, depression, divorce and job loss.

Michael Pugliese, a deputy commissioner for the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs, says officials realized that vets and their families had complex issues that couldn't be solved on the phone.
