HARLINGEN, Texas (AP) - A new $40 million clinic for war veterans will open in Harlingen in 2010.

That will eliminate 95% of the need for Rio Grande Valley veterans to travel to San Antonio for medical care.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs says it'll sign a long-term lease with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio for a 120,000-square foot clinic.

That clinic will be built at UTSA's Regional Academic Health Center campus and provide outpatient surgical procedures previously available to veterans only in San Antonio. The VA says it should be completed by October 2010 and will add to other medical services already available at the South Texas VA Health Care Center.

Valley veterans have lobbied for years for a veterans hospital.
