200,000 in Carolinas yet to claim stimulus check
RALEIGH, N.C. — Some 200,000 retirees and disabled veterans in the Carolinas have only three weeks to file for an economic stimulus check.
The Internal Revenue Service said Wednesday about 82 percent of eligible people have filed for the stimulus check in North Carolina, but more than 137,000 are outstanding. Almost 69,000 potential recipients haven't filed in South Carolina.
Recipients of Social Security or Veterans Affairs benefits must file by Oct. 15 to receive their rebate. Those people don't normally file a tax return because their government benefits are not taxable.
An economic stimulus package approved by Congress earlier this year provides eligible Americans with rebates of up to $600 individually and $1,200 for married couples.
